Cinco mil años de palabras
(5000 Years of Words)

The Adventures of a Cello
English edition

'None of the great musicians or composers, past or present, has ever thought of telling the story behind the instrument that has so loyally accompanied them for so many years. ... This chronicle, by Carlos Prieto, a world-famous cellist and a cultured, sensitive man with the inexhautible curiosity of the sages, has succeeded in solving this mystery so completely that I am finally at peace.' – Alvaro Mutis, from the forward.

Las Aventuras de un Violonchelo, Historias y Memorias
(The Adventures of a Cello, History and Memories)

As the author writes: 'In 1720, a violoncello known as "the Piatti," one of the main protagonists of this book, was born in Cremona, Italy. Created by Antonio Stradivarius, it has undergone peaceful, turbulent and tragic periods for over the past 300 years.

'The book is divided in three parts: a short history of violin-making, the chronicle of the Piatti (including its 20 years with me) and a survey of the music written for the cello, with particular emphasis on the largely ignored repertoire from Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

'The second part of the book focuses mainly on the milestones in the life of the Piatti, in my own life and on my adventures and travels all over the world with this violoncello. Its existence from 1720 to 1979 has been the object of my research. However, since it came into my hands 20 years ago, its life has been intimately tied to mine. Therefore, this story contains many autobiographical ingredients. I make a brief account of the many travels and adventures on tours throughout the world that the Piatti and I have made together. I include some of our tours of Europe, Asia and the Americas. I also cover, in particular, one of the subjects that has interested me more passionately in the last 15 years: the promotion of the music from Mexico and from the Spanish an Portuguese speaking countries from both sides of the Atlantic. I discuss the music and musicians of Latin America, Spain and Portugal, the works that I premiered, almost always with the Piatti, the often picturesque conditions that surrounded these premieres, and my tours and musical adventures with this cello.'

In his prologue, the eminent write Álvaro Mutis writes: 'The reader holds a book in his or her hands of transcendent value, without antecedents, on the history of music. The author unites an intimate and sentimental testimony to a historiographic work in the field of music, which has no frontiers. He takes his cello with him as his pretext and guide in its life among men. Therefore this book is, let's admit it, a beautiful love story. Let us give praise to Carlos Prieto, for having known so splendidly how to fill a vacuum in the life of incurable music bugs.'

De la URSS a Rusia, Tres Décadas de Experiencias y Observaciones de un Testigo
From the USSR to Russia, Three Decades of the Experiences and Observations of a Witness

Few Mexicans have had such a long and varied contact with Russia and the USSR as cellist Carlos Prieto, a man of many talents. Born in Mexico, he speaks fluent Spanish, English, French and Russian. He holds two degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he was the president of a steelmaking company in Mexico before abandoning his business activities to return to his vocation: music.

Carlos Prieto arrived for the first time in Russia in 1962, at the invitation of the Trade Minister of the USSR, Anastas I. Mikoyan. He got a Russian language certificate at the Lomonosov University in Moscow. Since then, he returned many times on concert tours that took him from Moscow and Leningrad to the remotest corners of that enormous country. His last tour to the Soviet Union took place a few weeks before the final collapse of the USSR un December of 1991.

During three decades, Carlos Prieto lived memorable experiences and accumulated many observations which he shares with the readers in this book: his experiences with Igor Stravinsky when he visited his homeland in 1962 for the first and only time in half a century; the thrill at locating in Moscow the long lost sister of a Russian emigre in Mexico; his concerts throughout Russia, the Ukraine, Moldavia, the Baltic republics, the Central Asian and Caucasus republics. The names of the Soviet leaders, from Lenin to Gorbachev and Yeltsin appear in these pages together with those of modest, common people, and the members of the intelligentsia met by Carlos Prieto, particularly musicians. A whole chapter is devoted to Shostakovich and his tormented life under Communism.

The sudden collapse of the USSR and 30 years of history and of captivating stories are the subjects of this most unusual book.
